What is the frequency spectrum of a two-way radio?
KNOWLEDGE HUB
Two-way radios operate in a variety of frequency bands, ranging from Very High Frequency (VHF) to Ultra High Frequency (UHF).
The specific frequencies used by two-way radios are determined by regulatory agencies in each country, for the UK it is Ofcom.
VHF low band (136-144 MHz): Up to 5 miles
Construction sites, public safety agencies, recreational activities
VHF high band (150-174 MHz): Up to 10 miles
Construction sites, public safety agencies, recreational activities, industrial environments
UHF low band (400-470 MHz): Up to 15 miles
Industrial environments, large organisations, emergency response teams
UHF high band (470-512 MHz): Up to 20 miles
Industrial environments, large organisations, emergency response teams
UHF extended band (512-527 MHz): Up to 25 miles
Industrial environments, large organisations, emergency response teams
Please note that these are just general guidelines as the actual range of a two-way radio will depend on several factors, such as power, terrain, and interference.
What is VHF?
VHF operate in the frequency range of 136-174 MHz This frequency range is well-suited for applications that require a moderate range, such as construction sites, public safety agencies, and recreational activities. VHF two-way radios typically have a range of up to 5 miles in open areas.
What is UHF?
UHF two-way radios operate in the frequency range of 400-527 MHz This frequency range is well-suited for applications that require a longer range, such as industrial environments, large Organisations, and emergency response teams. UHF two-way radios typically have a range of up to 20 miles in open areas.
What is the difference between Licensed and Unlicensed two-way radios?
Two-way radios can operate on licensed or unlicensed frequencies. Licensed frequencies are typically used by businesses and organisations that require a high level of security and reliability. Unlicensed frequencies are typically used by individuals and hobbyists who do not require the same level of security.
What is the difference between Digital and Analogue two-way radios
Two-way radios can be analogue or digital. Analogue two-way radios use traditional analogue modulation techniques, such as FM and AM. Digital two-way radios use digital modulation techniques, such as TDMA. Digital two-way radios offer several advantages over analogue two-way radios, including improved sound quality, better range, and the ability to transmit data.
How are frequencies Allocated?
The allocation of frequency bands for two-way radios is regulated by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The ITU's Radio Regulations define the frequency bands that can be used for different purposes, including commercial, government, and military use.
